“AI Takes to the Skies in Historic Dogfight against Human Pilot”
The limits of artificial intelligence were tested and expanded when the US military conducted the world's first known combat between an AI-controlled jet and a human pilot. A specially modified F-16 known as the X-62A, steered by AI, found itself locked in a thrilling dogfight over California's Edwards Air Force Base.
AI's entry into fighter jet domain didn't come out of the blue. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has been testing AI's decision-making abilities using flight simulators on the ground for years. Remarkably, in 2020, these ‘AI agents' defeated human pilots in every single one of the five simulated match-ups. But the real test was to assess the technology's performance in the air.
In the human versus AI duel, despite reaching hair-raising speeds up to 1,200 mph and narrowing down the distance to 600 meters, safety was never compromised. Pilots were onboard the X-62A, but at no point did they need to seize control.
The event, hailed as a “transformational moment in aerospace history” by DARPA, represents significant progress in aviation technology. However, who won the battle remains shrouded in mystery as the military has not released that information.
