The AI landscape is seething with intense competition as new Large Language Models (LLMs) are whipping up a storm every other day. From open source organizations to billion-dollar Silicon Valley startups, the race to monetize their powerful AI models is well and truly on.
A recent striking development was the toppling of long-reigning monarch GPT-4, thanks to Anthropic, a spin-off from OpenAI which hit the headlines for securing billions from Google and Amazon. Anthropic, steered by former OpenAI luminaries Daniela Amodei, Dario Amodei, Jack Clark, and Jared Kaplan, have managed to outshine GPT-4 with their Claude 3, specifically its top version, “Opus.” It has outperformed even GPT-4 Turbo, OpenAI's crème de la crème.
But it doesn't end there. The fourth place, according to Chatbot Arena's ranking, was surprisingly bagged by Command R+, an AI startup Cohere from Toronto, Canada, beating out the extremely vaunted French startup, Mistral AI.
Interestingly, the better an AI model, the further it moves from the open-source ambit. To harness these top models, developers typically have to shell out three to five times more for these models than their inferior, albeit cheaper, counterparts. Besides, these commercial models levy a cost on their usage based on the tokens used for input and output.
