“AI Security Alert: GPT-4 Exploits Real World Security Vulnerabilities”
In a recent development, large language models coupled with automation software have been proven to successfully exploit real world security vulnerabilities. A study, conducted by four University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) computer scientists, revealed that OpenAI's new GPT-4 can exploit the mentioned vulnerabilities if given a CVE advisory describing the flaw.
Their study involved a dataset of 15 one-day vulnerabilities, some of which are classified as critically severe in the CVE description. Astonishingly, GPT-4 was capable of exploiting 87% of these vulnerabilities, demonstrating superior performance than its predecessor models and open-source vulnerability scanners.
Alarmingly, these “one-day” vulnerabilities that are described are those that have been disclosed but remain unpatched. If we project the capabilities of future models, it's likely they will be far more capable than what we’ve seen from previous models, even surpassing the current capabilities of script kiddies.
Providing a solution, Daniel Kang, assistant professor at UIUC, suggests proactive security measures such as regularly updating packages when security patches are released, rather than simply restricting access to security information to counter this emerging threat.
