Redefining Cybersecurity: GPT-4 Exploits Vulnerabilities in Minutes
The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign's ground-breaking research exposing the dark side of Artificial Intelligence, particularly GPT-4, is causing a stir in the cybersecurity world. This AI, created by OpenAI, is capable of exploiting public vulnerabilities impacting real-world systems merely by reading online articles about them.
Alarmingly, these discoveries could zen up previously dormant AI-based cyber threats. The criminals behind these schemes often use large language models (LLMs). These LLMs, with the help of GPT-4 and an open-source framework, can automate the hacking fastest. The breaches happen as soon as the vulnerabilities become public.
While there are genuine fears about this technology's potential misuse, Daniel Kang, one of the researchers, suggests that organizations should focus on strengthening their security practices.
GPT-4 was put to test against 15 known vulnerabilities in Open Source Software, with varying degrees of cybersecurity risk. Out of these, the AI model successfully exploited an undeniable 87% of the total vulnerabilities. Nevertheless, Kang reassures that this exploitation is something that an expert human could also manage. Yet, if threat actors start utilizing LLMs for automating exploitation of public vulnerabilities, diligent patching may no longer be an option but an absolute compulsion.
