“Taking the Lead with AI: Nigeria Launches First Multilingual Large Language Model”
In a remarkable stride toward empowering artificial intelligence (AI) in Africa, Nigeria has launched its inaugural multilingual large language model (LLM). Spearheaded by the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, this initiative marks Nigeria's aggressive push towards establishing a leadership position within the growing AI field.
Nigeria's Communications Minister, Dr. Bosun Tijani, shed light on the development on Friday, April 19. He specified that this venture stemmed from an intensive 4-day AI workshop held at Abuja, the capital city.
The impressive LLM came into the limelight due to a powerful alliance between Nigerian AI company Awarritech, global tech firm DataDotOrg, the National Centre for AI and Robotics (NCAIR), and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).
“The LLM will be trained in five low-resource languages plus accented English. Our aim is to ensure a stronger language representation in the present data sets for AI solution development,” Dr. Tijani stated. The model will also be fortified by contributions from over 7,000 fellows from the 3MTT Nigeria program.
The 4-day workshop was nothing short of productive. It saw the convening of over 120 AI experts, whose collective efforts led to Nigeria's preliminary National AI Strategy draft and several groundbreaking announcements. One such disclosure centered around 21st Century Technologies, Galaxy Backbone, and NCAIR Nigeria coming together to fast-track crucial AI projects for the nation.
