“UK Regulators Increase Scrutiny of Tech Giants' Participation in AI Startups”
For fans of AI technology, it's been a time of intrigue. The UK's competition watchdog, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), has increased investigations into leading tech firms' involvement in AI startups.
In the spotlight are three moves by Microsoft and Amazon as the CMA charts the next frontier of big tech and AI startups' relation. Microsoft's investments in French firm Mistral and recruitment of DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman to head their new AI division are under scrutiny. Additionally, Amazon's substantial £3.2bn investment in the US-based AI firm, Anthropic is also under review.
Why is this happening you might ask? The CMA is concerned that these tie-ups are granting the tech giants covert control over potential competitors – essentially limiting market competition. Furthermore, the watchdog aligns these developments with concerns about an ‘interconnected web' of AI partnerships among six tech companies: Google; Microsoft; Meta; Amazon; Apple; and Nvidia.
The CMA will conduct a two-phase investigation. Initially, the watchdog will investigate if these partnerships fall under the UK merger rules, and any potential competition concerns. The following phase may require the tech giants to make particular amendments if the first phase raises issues.
