“Cops Using AI to Write Police Reports: Pros and Cons”

“AI Revolutionizing Law Enforcement, But At What Cost?”

The age of artificial intelligence (AI) has dawned upon us, and one AI innovation is alarming some while giving hope to others. Axon Enterprise Inc., the renowned creators of Taser, have introduced an AI technology, “Draft One”, to automate police reports.

This technology uses the extensive language model GPT-4 to write reports by auto-transcribing audio from police body cameras. It's being touted as a revolutionary way for understaffed police departments to save crucial time that can be put back into community endeavors.

However, it's important to examine the potential drawbacks of this landmark innovation. Two main concerns arise in the public eye: accountability and accuracy. Even with AI gaining widespread usage, it isn't without flaws. Dave Maass, director at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, called the new product “kind of a nightmare.” The AI's tendency to “hallucinate,” or invent information, carries the fear of false statements appearing in reports.

Moreover, Axon's response of having humans review the reports does little to alleviate public skepticism, considering public trust levels in police diligence. As Draft One undergoes trials in law enforcement agencies, the question remains: is the convenience of AI worth the potential hazards?

We'd love to hear your thoughts. Is AI in law enforcement a step forward or a risky gamble?
