AI Inconsistencies Pose Risk in Emergencies

Artificial intelligence has proven to be helpful in some areas of medicine, but it may not be ready to assess heart risk in emergency situations. Indiana's Washington State University's Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine conducted a recent study which was published in the PLOS One journal; it focused on OpenAI's ChatGPT program and its reaction to simulated cases of patients experiencing chest pain. Dr. Thomas Heston, the lead researcher, pointed out that the AI produced inconsistent risk assessment levels despite being given identical patient data.

This inconsistency can spell potential danger in emergency situations where accurate evaluation of symptoms is vital for immediate treatment decisions. Traditional methods currently used by doctors like TIMI and HEART checklists provided much more reliable results. These calculators take into account symptoms, health history, and patient’s age to assess heart risk.
Dr. Heston, however, doesn't rule out AI completely. He believes AI can still be a useful tool in the ER, especially when it comes to analyzing complex cases and creating differential diagnoses, but underlines the importance of further research.

With the speed of technological advancements, it’s critical to understand its limitations and potential repercussions fully, particularly in high-stakes scenarios like the ER. To learn more about AI in healthcare, visit the Mayo Clinic website.
