In a recent conference held by the European Association of Research Managers and Administrators (EARMA), delegates were confronted with a stark message: “Embrace AI, or risk falling behind.” The declaration came from notable data scientist, Katja Mankinen, as she addressed a packed room at this important event in Odense, Denmark.
The room was filled with research managers and administrators (RMAs) – many of whom have voiced their apprehensions that their services might be replaced by the rapid advancement of AI. Acknowledging these concerns, Mankinen assured her audience that AI is not out to replace them, but to aid them. She suggested delegates leave mundane tasks to AI, thus freeing up their time for more engaging aspects of their work.
Mankinen was not alone. Maria Maunula, a senior research funding specialist, encouraged RMAs to treat AI as a “new colleague” that they should understand and work with. She acknowledged that AI is not perfect but insisted it can be an essential ally in administrative and research tasks.
Adding to the discussion, Thomas Alslev Christensen, a senior vice-president, advised RMAs to adopt AI to make their jobs “more enjoyable.”
AI has the capacity to aid RMAs in a variety of tasks including administrative work, funding discovery, and fostering interdisciplinarity by connecting research opportunities with appropriate researchers.
