“Reinventing Language Learning: Google Tests AI Conversation Practice”
Did you know Google is stepping up its language learning game? Recently, Google has introduced an AI-language practice feature that promises a groundbreaking language learning experience. Now, English language learners can enjoy a real-time language immersion through English-speaking AI bots.
Previously restricted to providing feedback on spoken sentences, the speaking practice experience has been extensively revamped since its debut in October 2023. Now, learners have the opportunity to engage in ongoing dialogues, enabling a more comprehensive learning experience.
Initially, the feature is made available to Search Labs users stationed in Argentina, Colombia, India, Mexico, Venezuela, and Indonesia. Search Labs serves as Google’s potential new feature test-bed, though the feature can also surface based on translating to or from English on an Android device. As new launches usually go, English is the only language where feedback and conversation practice is offered.
Despite not being a traditional language learning platform like Duolingo, Babbel, or Pimsleur with a defined curriculum, Google aims to equip learners with practical dialogue skills rather than have them memorize words and phrases out of context. The potential for Google's AI language learning is undeniably expanding rapidly.
This advancement aligns with Google's dedication to enhancing its AI models with a broader range of language understanding. Other AI-enabled language learning platforms have paved the way, such as Duolingo, who integrated an AI chatbot in 2016 and incorporated GPT-4 in 2023; however, Google is making its mark in this domain.
Google’s transparency about its future language learning strategy is yet to come. However, it’s safe to assume that significant new chapters in language learning are around the corner, ones that might make even Duo, the owl mascot of Duolingo, feel apprehensive.
