Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for Bear Safety in Japan
Record-breaking bear attacks have caused a surge of fear and concern amongst Japan's residents. In response, Japan is taking unprecedented steps towards prioritizing public safety by launching an AI-based bear warning system.
Over the past year, bear-related incidents have soared, resulting in six deaths and more than 200 injuries across 19 prefectures. In an effort to curb this dire situation, authorities in Japan are piloting a revolutionary AI-based system in Toyama prefecture, Central Japan. Live feeds from government, municipal, and private security cameras will be monitored to detect bear activities in human-populated areas. Alarms will then be instantaneously dispatched to relevant local authorities, police, and hunters.
The sophisticated AI technology will also scrutinize the movement patterns of these often-dangerous creatures and attempt to forecast their future locations. If successful, the system will be expanded to other regions with significant bear populations.
The escalation in bear encounters is attributed to fluctuating harvests, which form the bulk of bear's staple food and an increasingly depopulating countryside. The absence of children, whose noises traditionally deter bears from human settlements, is also believed to be a significant contributor.
A similar AI surveillance system is currently under trial in Hanamaki city, North-Eastern Iwate prefecture, where 30 cameras have been stationed along rivers leading from the mountains to the city. The system aims to deter the bears from entering the city.
