In an unprecedented move accelerating Africa's AI development, Nigeria unveiled its first multilingual large language model (LLM). This remarkable project proudly highlights Nigeria's ambition to be at the forefront of AI innovation across the continent.
Announced by the country's Communications Minister, Dr. Bosun Tijani, this development highlights a formidable collaboration between Nigerian AI company, Awarritech, global tech entity DataDotOrg, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Centre for AI and Robotics (NCAIR). Engineered for five low-resource languages and accented English, this LLM seeks to address the crucial representation of these languages in AI applications.
The launch took place amid a productive four-day AI workshop in Abuja, during which plans for Nigeria's National AI Strategy were also discussed. With substantial advancements and collaborations in the pipeline, Nigeria is gearing up to significantly amplify its AI capabilities.
This advancement is bolstered by foreign and local partners' support, including tech behemoths like Meta, Google, Microsoft, academic institutions, UNDP, and UNESCO, contributing to a significant seed fund of $3.5 million.
