“Game Changer in Cybersecurity? GPT-4 Shows Potent Capabilities”
The new AI sensation – GPT-4, has displayed an unprecedented ability to exploit real-world system vulnerabilities. According to a recent study, GPT-4 was successful at autonomously exploiting a staggering 87% of vulnerabilities, which translates to 13 out of a possible 15. This incredible feat was achieved by reading Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) advisories.
The study devised by four researchers from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign implemented a base LLM program, agent framework, tools and a simple 91 lines of codes. It's noteworthy that these experiments were conducted in a safe sandbox environment to prevent actual damage.
Interestingly, the removal of CVE descriptions significantly dropped the success rate to a mere 7%, implying that locating vulnerabilities is indeed a complex task for the LLM.
Cybersecurity is experiencing moments of monumental change, and GPT-4 proves itself to be a game changer in this sector. But what does this mean for the future of online safety?
